Missionary Priests—in Southwest Michigan
Fr. Peter Marie Mermier, a French priest, was the founder of the religious body of
priests and brothers that were able to lay the foundation for 2 Catholic
congregations - the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales (MSFS) of Annecy and the
Daughters of the Cross of Chavanod. The MSFS society was not a mere
association of priests, but a new religious congregation, bound by simple vows,
with special dedication for foreign missions. In 1845 these missionaries of St.
Francis de Sales set out for India.
The work of the MSFS society has prospered and since that time many priests and
seminarians have been sent for missionary service for the Catholic Church. Not
only India, but also England in 1861, and later France and Switzerland. A mission
in Brazil began in 1926, and the Fransalians entered the African Continent in 1988.
An autonomous American Mission was founded in 1990 and later raised to the
Status of a Region on July 3, 2007. In the United States the Fransalians currently
have communities of priests in Georgia, Texas, and southwest Michigan. Father
Arul (MSFS) of Sacred Heart of Mary is a member of the Fransalian Society of
priests.
Please join us to learn more about the
Catholic Missionary programs of the Fransalians (MSFS).
The discussion is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
