“Belfast”
A movie about growing up during the Troubles Written and Directed by Kenneth Branagh
The award winning film Belfast is a 2021 British coming-of-age film written and directed by Kenneth Branagh. The film stars Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan, and newcomer Jude Hill. The film, which Branagh has described as his "most personal film", follows a young boy's childhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the beginning of The Troubles in 1969. Director Branagh was born and brought up in Belfast, Northern Ireland before moving to Berkshire, England, in 1969.
Branagh!s family moved to England for safety as their home country was witnessing the prime of sectarian turmoil. The film chronicles the life of a working-class Ulster Protestant family from the perspective of their nine-year-old son Buddy. Buddy's father Pa works overseas in England, while the family—Ma, elder brother Will, and paternal grandparents Granny and Pop—live in Belfast. Critics say it is a film of formal beauty, with letter-perfect performances, includes complex and textured writing (also from Branagh) and enough comedic one-lines and Van Morrison musical montages to make you forget that you are watching a drama about seething sectarian hatreds”.
